Become a PADI IDC Staff Instructor
Preparing for Success
Before the Instructor Development Course (IDC) begins, we start with an IDC Staff Instructor Prep Course.
This includes orientation, exam pre-assessments, and a review of essential materials. We also provide you with the IDC Staff Instructor Crew Pack, guide you through digital paperwork, and ensure you have access to all necessary resources.
IDC Staff Instructor Prep Course
This intensive course, conducted a day or two before the IDC, covers key aspects of becoming an effective IDC Staff Instructor.
You will take the IDC Staff Instructor theory and General Standards & Procedures (GS&P) exams, with remediation provided to address any areas needing improvement.
This preparation is crucial for your success in assisting a Course Director and guiding diving instructor candidates.
Auditing the IDC
As an IDC Staff Instructor candidate, you learn to audit the entire IDC (Days 1-12) to gain a comprehensive understanding of the program.
This includes observing classroom presentations, participating in skill circuits, and attending candidate counselling sessions.
While auditing the Emergency First Response Instructor course and Mock IE is optional, it is highly recommended for enhancing your learning experience.
Mastering Dive Skills
We will refine your dive skills through a pro level 24-skill circuit and tailored practice sessions. Our focus on neutral buoyancy and skill development will ensure you are a confident and exemplary underwater role model for instructor candidates.
In-Water Workshops and Evaluation Training
You will actively participate in various in-water workshops throughout the IDC, working closely with candidates and providing guidance.
Our comprehensive evaluation training will prepare you to assess candidate performance in Knowledge Development, Confined Water, and Open Water presentations.
Evaluating Knowledge Development Presentations
You will observe and evaluate Knowledge Development presentations alongside the Course Director. Using learned techniques, you will provide constructive feedback and assist candidates in improving their presentation skills.
Evaluating Confined Water Teaching Presentations
In the water, you will evaluate confined water teaching presentations, using standardised slates to assess candidate performance. You will gain experience in providing positive reinforcement and suggesting areas for improvement.
Evaluating Open Water Teaching Presentations
You will complete Open Water evaluation training and assist candidates in preparing their presentations. During the presentations, you will be in the water, evaluating their performance and providing valuable feedback.
Back on the boat, you will review your evaluation scores, compare them against the Course Director’s standards, and assess the candidates’ debriefings. You will then have the opportunity to provide constructive critiques on their overall performance.
Evaluating Open Water presentations can be particularly demanding, both for candidates and IDC Staff Instructors, due to the inherent complexities of Open Water environments.
Refining Your Evaluation Skills
Throughout the IDC, you will receive ongoing feedback and guidance to refine your evaluation techniques, ensuring consistency and fairness in candidate assessments.
