Scuba Diving Experience on Koh Tao
The PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience is a great way to explore the wonderful underwater world in the warm ocean around Koh Tao under the guidance of a PADI Diving Instructor.
This half day introductory scuba diving experience is designed for individuals with little or no prior scuba diving experience who either don’t have the time to complete the full Open Water course , would like to try scuba diving before committing to a full certification course or just want to have a great experience and lots of fun.
Scheduled over 5-6 hours, you will complete a short e-learning module on your mobile phone before boarding our dive boat for an afternoon of discovery, exploration and fun!

What is the PADI Discover Scuba Diving course schedule?
We will meet you at 11am at Isla Tortuga Divers. You can complete the PADI Discover Scuba Diving e-learning on your mobile phone (20-30 minutes) before meeting your PADI Instructor, trying on the scuba equipment to ensure the wetsuit, fins, etc., are a good fit. Then, we can walk down to the pier (60 seconds from our dive center) and board our dive boat.
If you are staying with us, you can grab a light lunch; maybe a sandwich.
Your PADI Instructor will give you a thorough briefing and explain the shallow (confined) water skills you will complete prior to making the dive.
Confined Water Training

We will usually dive one of the many shallow bays around Koh Tao on our afternoon dives. This means we will take you into the shallow water where you can stand. You will descend into a kneeling position with your head just under the water. Here your Diving Instructor will demonstrate each skill and then give you an opportunity to practice and master the skill.
If we are unable to find water deep enough to stand, your Instructor will conduct the skills using a descent line that is within 2 metres/6 feet of the surface.
When we do this you will complete the skills at an Instructor to student ratio of 1:1.
Open Water Dive in the Ocean
Once we have completed the confined water skills, and both you and your Instructor are comfortable, you can venture a little deeper and enjoy an Open Water dive.
The maximum depth you will be taken will be 12 meters, and the time you spend on the dive depends on the rate at which you and your buddy breathe your air, something your Instructor will discuss with you during the briefing.
If you would like to make a second dive on the same day, you can tell your Instructor who will make the necessary arrangement on the boat. For the second dive you will not need to redo the confined water skills and can just go for a dive!
The additional dive will be priced at 1,000 THB and you can pay this when you get back to the dive center.
What Requirements Are Necessary to do a PADI Discover Scuba Dive?
To embark on this exciting adventure and get a taste of the ocean:
- Be in good health. You will have to fill out a medical form to make sure that there are no contraindications with diving.
- Minimum age: You have to be at least 10 years old to enrol on the Discover Scuba Diving experience.
