Shallow Dive Sites on Koh Tao
Japanese Gardens: This site, located just off Koh Nang Yuan, is perfect for beginners and snorkelers. It features a gently sloping reef with an abundance of hard and soft corals, creating a vibrant underwater garden. Expect to see colorful reef fish, moray eels, and maybe even a turtle or two.

Twins Pinnacles Dive Site
Twins is arguably Koh Tao’s most popular dive site, and for good reason! It is a fantastic spot for scuba divers of all levels, particularly those undergoing diver training.
Topography: The dive site consists of three granite rock pinnacles: two large boulders covered in corals and a smaller, deeper pinnacle to the west. These pinnacles rise from a sandy bottom at around 10-20 meters, with the shallowest points at around 5 meters. This varied topography creates exciting swim-throughs, small caves, and overhangs to explore.
Marine Life: Twins is teeming with life! Expect to see a huge variety of reef fish, including angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, and parrotfish. You may also spot moray eels peeking out from crevices, stingrays gliding over the sand, and even the occasional green sea turtle.
Corals: Both hard and soft corals thrive here. You will find vibrant displays of Acropora coral, brain coral, and table coral, as well as colorful sea fans, whip corals, and anemones.
Location: Twins is located just off the west coast of Koh Nang Yuan, a small island connected to Koh Tao by a sandbar. This makes it a very easy dive site to reach by boat.
Conditions: The dive site is generally sheltered from strong currents, making it ideal for relaxed dives. Visibility is usually good, ranging from 5 to 20 meters.
White Rock Dive Site
White Rock is another favorite dive site on Koh Tao, offering a diverse underwater landscape and abundant marine life.
- Topography: This site features two large rock formations, along with a series of smaller boulders and a shallow coral garden. The granite rocks create interesting swim-throughs and overhangs, providing shelter for various marine creatures.
- Marine Life: White Rock is known for its healthy population of titan triggerfish, but be cautious during mating season as they can be territorial!
You will also find a variety of reef fish, including groupers, snappers, and moray eels. Keep an eye out for the occasional stingray or green or hawksbill sea turtle passing by.

- Location: White Rock is situated south of Koh Nang Yuan, making it another easily accessible dive site from Koh Tao.
- Conditions: This dive site can experience some currents, but they are generally mild. Visibility is usually good, especially during the dry season.

Deep Dive Sites on Koh Tao
Chumphon Pinnacle: This impressive granite pinnacle, located about 11km northwest of Koh Tao, rises from a depth of 35 meters to 14 meters below the surface. It’s a haven for pelagic fish, including barracuda, tuna, and even the occasional whale shark (seasonal). The pinnacle is covered in colorful soft corals and sponges, adding to the visual spectacle.
South West Pinnacle: Another deep dive site, South West Pinnacle, features a series of pinnacles rising from the depths. The topography creates exciting swim-throughs and overhangs, where you can find groupers, snappers, and other reef fish seeking shelter. Keep an eye out for larger pelagic species like trevallies and kingfish patrolling the area.
Sail Rock: While not technically on Koh Tao, Sail Rock is a must-dive for any diver visiting the island. Located about an hour’s boat ride away, this massive granite pinnacle rises from the depths to just a few meters below the surface.
It is a cleaning station for larger pelagic fish, so you might encounter whale sharks, Stingrays and schools of barracuda. The pinnacle is also covered in vibrant soft corals and anemones, creating a stunning underwater landscape.
Ship Wreck Dive Sites on Koh Tao
HTMS Sattakut: This retired navy ship, sunk in 2011, is now a thriving artificial reef. It’s located in deeper water and is situated at 30 meters depth at the stern, making it accessible to Advanced Open Water divers of all levels.
The wreck is home to a variety of marine life, including batfish, lionfish, and scorpionfish. You can even swim through some sections of the wreck, adding an element of adventure to your dive.
